Eagles Peak Trail Information - United States Air Force Academy (USAFA)
Eagles Peak is a striking landmark on the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) property in Colorado Springs, rising prominently above the Cadet Area.
The hike to its summit is a short but steep challenge, rewarding visitors with panoramic views of the Academy grounds, Pikes Peak, and the Front Range. To access the trail, visitors must enter through the USAFA’s North Gate (off I-25, Exit 156). A valid photo ID is required for all adults, and vehicles are subject to security checks since this is an active military installation. The trailhead is located near the Academy’s main campus, just west of the Cadet Area.
The Eagles Peak Trail itself is about 2 miles round trip, but it gains over 1,700 feet in elevation, making it a strenuous climb. The route is rocky and steep in places, with loose footing, but hikers are rewarded at the top with sweeping views of Colorado Springs, the Rampart Range, and the Academy below. While short, it is considered a difficult hike, so sturdy footwear, water, and preparation for changing mountain weather are recommended.
The Eagles Peak trailhead is a short (1.5 miles one-way), steep (2,010' of elevation gain) hike with an amazing 360-degree view from the summit. The trailhead for this peak is on Air Force Academy's property. Please check their current visitation policy prior to your trip (call 719-333-2025) and always bring your driver's license/photo ID with you.
