Climbing the Manitou Incline? Important Safety Tips

Hiking the Manitou Incline in Colorado is a challenging but rewarding experience. It climbs nearly 2,000 feet in less than a mile, so preparation is key. Here are important safety tips:

1. Know Your Limits

  • The incline is very steep and physically demanding; know your physical limitations.

  • If you have heart or respiratory issues, consult your doctor before attempting it.

  • Turn back if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous.

2. Acclimate to Altitude

  • The incline starts at about 6,500 feet and ends above 8,500 feet.

  • Spend a day or two at elevation before hiking to avoid altitude sickness.

3. Stay Hydrated

  • Bring at least 1–2 liters of water.

  • Drink water before, during, and after your hike.

4. Start Early

  • Begin your hike early in the morning to avoid heat and crowds.

  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.

5. Wear Proper Gear

  • Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential.

  • Wear breathable, moisture-wicking clothing.

  • Bring layers, especially if it's early or late in the season.

6. Use the Barr Trail for Descent

  • Descending the Incline is not allowed and is dangerous.

  • Hike down via the Barr Trail, which is about 4 miles back to the base.

7. Watch Your Step

  • Steps are uneven and can be slippery, especially when wet or snowy.

  • Use the bail-out points if needed — these lead to the Barr Trail partway up.

8. Be Weather-Aware

  • Check the forecast before heading out.

  • Avoid hiking during rain, snow, or thunderstorms.

9. Reserve Your Spot

  • As of recent regulations, you must make a free reservation online to hike.

  • Check Manitou Incline’s website for other details, including where to park.

10. Be Respectful

  • Pack out all trash.

  • Be courteous to fellow hikers — it gets crowded, especially near the summit.
